Telluride Homes The
Town of Telluride
"How
did Telluride get its name?" The sorry answer is that no one knows for sure.
One legend pontificates that the name originates from the phrase "To Hell you
ride." Ute Indians apparently asserted this sentiment to traveling gold miners
when the Utes refused to act as their mountain guides in the midst of a snowstorm.
Another less exciting theory is the name comes from the ore Telluridium, although
this was never mined in this region. Today Telluride is a dignified but relaxed
small town resort community. The diversity remains charmingly intact. Dreadlocked
20-somethings, earthy nature-lovers, urban transplants, rugged outdoorsmen and
women, sophisticates, celebrities, and old-timers all blend together to create
an enthusiastic, festive small town atmosphere unlike that of any other resort
town. Located at 8800 feet above sea level, Telluride shares the same latitude
as Athens, Greece and San Francisco, and sports 300 sunny days and 309 inches
of snowfall a year!
